The Story of the Wharf Rat-Hero Of the American Revolution
During the occupation of Salem Harbor by the British Navy, the British were raucously celebrating what they thought would be a victory the next day.
After a lengthy evening of grog and merriment they had retired for the evening. As the British soldiers slept, along scurried a lone wharf rat who began gnawing on the docking line which held their ship in place causing the ship to float out to the treacherous Salem Channel. This act by the fearless wharf rat caused the ship to drift into a large rock and sink to the bottom of the ocean. Unbeknownst to the lone rat this turned the tides on the British Stronghold and gave us the advantage at a critical time in the American Revolution.
In honor of this heroic deed, General Hendricks, first cousin to George Washington, decreed a drink shall be created to commemorate the wharf rats heroic deeds. He then placed the recipe in thirteen bottles, one for each of the colonies. Years later, during the renovation of the wharf, we came upon one of the bottles with the account of the wharf rat’s adventures. In that moment, our signature beverage The Wharf Rat was born. We are sure he would be pleased to know you are enjoying his namesake beverage while overlooking picturesque Salem Harbor.
Mysteriously, the other twelve bottles are unaccounted for.
Commemorate and pay tribute to this adventure and this unsung hero’s deeds by ordering a Wharf Rat drink in a souvenir glass. Wharf rat T-shirts are also available.
